How to Manage Sports and School

Overview
The end of the school year is approaching but with the end in sight also comes increased assignments and possibly more sports related activities. Balancing a busy schedule with academics can be overwhelming, but with the right tools and planning it doesn’t have to be. In this blog post we are going to look at effective methods to manage both school work and sports, the methods we will be looking at are setting clear priorities, creating a schedule, setting goals, and having rest built into your schedule.
Determine your priorities
An important step in managing both busy sports schedules and school work is to determine your priorities and then allocate your time accordingly. This is important to determine what items you are going to spend your time doing and what items you are not going to spend your time doing. Each week you should look at your schedule and determine what items take highest priority and focus your main attention on that task. For example if you have a big test one week, you should prioritize school work and studying, but if you have a big game a different week then you should prioritize preparing for the big game.
Create a schedule
Another, important task that will make balancing school work and sports easier is creating a schedule. When creating your schedule for the week, month, or year its important to mark down all assignments, tests, training, games, rest and social activities. Creating a schedule will allow you to get a preview of the upcoming week and prepare for the different activities that you are during the week. A schedule is a very effective method to make sure that you aren’t missing any school work, sports activities, or social engagements.
Set goals
Furthermore, setting goals for sports and schools is another effective method that will keep student athletes motivated to do well in both their sport and their schoolwork. These goals should be a SMART goal to make sure that they are going to be accomplished. SMART stands for:
Specific - A goal that is clearly defined.
Measurable - A goal that has measurable benchmarks so you can track your progress towards achieving the goal.
Achievable - A goal that is able to be realistically accomplished.
Relevant - Why do you want to achieve your goal?
Time based - A goal that is based on some sort of time measurement
Have breaks and rest built into your schedule
Juggling school work and sports can be very exhausting and if you don’t take time in your schedule to do something fun it could lead to burnout. Burnout occurs when student athletes are overly stressed about their sport and schoolwork and can lead to a reduced performance in their sport, chronic fatigue, and a drop in performance at school. To prevent burnout from occurring it is important to not only get enough sleep and rest but also do something fun that is not related to your sport or school. This could include activities like spending time with family and friends, doing a hobby you enjoy, traveling somewhere new, or trying something new.
