Non-Sports Related Activities That Can Help Your Kids Play Better

Overview
For your kids to do well in a sport it requires them to have to spend a lot of time practicing and competing in that sport. This usually involves your kids doing activities that are directly related to their sport in order to help them improve their skills. But there are non sports related activities that can also help your kids improve valuable skills that are needed on the field. Some skills that can be built off the field by doing activities like cooking and yoga are teamwork, problem solving, and focus.
Teamwork
When participating in activities that aren’t related to sports but still include working in a team it can help your child to grow their teamwork skills. Team work is important for children who are participating in a team sport because you can’t be successful as a team unless you can work together cohesively. Team work skills are important not only for sports but also for future jobs or school group project that your child might be a part of in the future. Some activities that have your kids working with their peers are activities like participating in academically focused teams like debate team or math team. Being a part of these teams help your child to not only grow in their communication skills but can also help them grow their academic skills. They can also grow in their team work skills without being a part of another team activity, instead they can work on solving puzzles, baking, or performing a task with their friends to help them learn how to work with other people to be able to effectively complete a task, solve a puzzle, or bake a yummy treat.
Problem Solving
Another useful skill that can be learned out side of sports are problem solving skills. It’s important for your kids to be able to think on their feet while playing and be able to adjust their playing based on the different challenges they face. Problem solving is not only important during competitions but can also help them to overcome challenges that arise in their training as well. These not only help them to be better athletes but help them to be able to come up with solutions that they face everyday or in their future careers. Some good activities to help your kid grow their problem solving skills are board games, card games, sudoku, science experiments, and baking. All of these activities can be done at home and are fun for both you and your child. Not only are they fun and simple but they help kids to grow their problem solving skills by working towards winning a game, solving a puzzle, and more.
Focus
Lastly, focus is another important aspect of doing well in school that can be improved by doing activities outside of your kid’s sport. Focus is a very important skill to have while competing and practicing. This helps your kid be able to track the ball, know where they need to be, and be able to assist their team mates in performing well. The activities that help to increase your child's focus are activities where they sit down and work on one thing or focus on doing a certain task. These activities include things like yoga, musical chairs, obstacle courses, and puzzles. These activities have your child maintain focus on specific tasks, like their breathing in yoga, sitting in a chair when the music stops in musical chairs, doing different tasks in an obstacle course, and using multiple pieces to solve a puzzle. All these activities and more help to improve your child’s focus both on and off the field.
