Being in the water and near the water is a lot of fun but it also can be very dangerous for young kids, especially ones that are under 5. Swim Lessons
Swims lessons are a good tool to help kids know how to swim and be able to save themselves in the event of a water emergency. Starting swimming lessons as early as 1 could save a child’s life in the event of a water emergency. Through swimming lessons younger kids are taught how to float and the basics swim skills that they can use to save themselves in an emergency. Swim lessons are also important for older kids to make sure that they are safe in the water. Other safety tips
Swims lessons and watching safety videos are great ways to learn more about water safety and prevent water emergencies. But here are some other good practicals to keep kids safe around water.
- Know how to perform CPR and how to rescue someone from the water. While you want to prevent any water emergencies that could happen it’s also important to know how to respond appropriately and quickly in the event that an emergency does happen.
- Put a fence around outdoor pools that has a self closing and self latching gate that is at least 4 feet high. Along with that if you have an outdoor pool put alarms on doors that lead to the pool, have a pool alarm, and have a safety cover over the pool.
- While in the water make sure that you are always touching distance from your child so that you can easily get to them.
- When you are not in the pool and are just watching your child you must pay close attention to them and not to activities that could take your attention away from them like, reading or talking.
- While kids are in water make sure that they have on a life jacket that is U.S. Coast Guard approved.
