How Athletics Help Academic Success

Overview
Participating in sports can help athletes develop crucial life skills that can help them be successful on and off the field. Through sports athletes learn skills like problem solving, team work, and dedication which can be applied to their school work and academics. In today’s blog post we will be looking at different skills that are developed through playing sports and how they can help young athletes be successful in the classroom.
Problem Solving
Playing a sport requires athletes to think on their feet and solve problems quickly. In a fast paced game environment athletes have to make quick decisions as how to play against their opponent in order to win. Making these quick decisions and working through the problem of how to win the game is how problem solving skills are learned. Another aspect of sports that builds problem solving skills is making mistakes and learning from them. This can be seen when athletes make mistakes while playing and they change their approach so that they don’t continue to make the same mistakes. The skill of problem solving isn’t just important for athletics but it is also important for academic success. Through building problem solving skills in athletics athletes will be ready to use these skills in the classroom to be able to work through challenging course work or come up with study plans that will help them do well on assignments and tests.
Team Work
In a team sport, team work is critical for the success of the team, a soccer team needs to be working together in order to be successful and win games. Through communicating with their teammates during games, athletes build their team work skills. These skills are also learned through continuously putting your own goals aside to focus on the team goals. Learning team work through sports helps in the classroom because students constantly have to work with others to succeed. Through group projects and collaborating in classes students need team work skills in order to forge new friendships and be successful in group projects during the school year.
Dedication
Playing a sport requires a high level of dedication to be able to play well during competitions and grow as a player. Athletes build dedication through continually showing up to practices, games, and training sessions. Even though practices aren’t always easy or fun they still continue to show up and know that to get better they consistently need to put in effort. They also learn dedication through making sacrifices like not eating junk food or skipping some social events so that their playing can continue to get better. These aspects that accompany being dedicated to a sport can also be applied to school. To be successful in school it’s important to have some level of dedication through doing homework, studying, and trying to do well. This dedication to school is similar to the dedication needed to play a sport and also means that you have to make some sacrifices like going to bed early or studying instead of doing things with your friends.
