Inspirational Coaching Stories

Overview
Coaches are the backbone of every team and can have a massive impact on the teams and individual players that they coach. They have an important role to not only lead the team to victory but help each player be the best player that they can be. At Top Tier Lessons our coaches strive to not only help your kids get better at their sport but also inspire them to be the best player that they can be. In today’s blog post we are going to be looking at two influential coaches, Herb Brooks and John Wooden.
Herb Brooks
Herb Brooks was an influential hockey coach who coached the gold medal-winning U.S. Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey team in 1980. Before he was a gold medal-winning coach he started off by playing in two olympic games, but he did not win any medals during his time on the ice. But he was able to move onto coaching and helped the University of Minnesota’s Men’s Ice Hockey go from last place in their division to becoming the national champions. He was most known for coaching the gold medal winning U.S. Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey team, who beat the odds to win against the previous gold medal winners, the Soviet Union, and Finland. He was able to coach and inspire a team of players who did not previously have professional hockey experience to be able to win a gold medal. After his time coaching for the Olympics he went onto become a coach for the NHL. Herb Brooks helped his players to live up to their full potential and to beat the odds in order to win the gold medal for the U.S.
John Wooden
John Wooden was an inspirational and successful coach of the UCLA Men’s Basketball team. He had a successful career as a college basketball coach through winning 12 championships, being named basketball coach of the year 6 times by NCAA, and through helping several of his athletes become professional basketball players after college. According to the website The Wooden Effect he had a coaching philosophy that wanted to create athletes that didn’t just measure success by wins or the score. Through this belief he created the Pyramid of Success, which created a framework that showed the traits that a successful person would have. This model was not only beneficial while he was coaching but is still seen as an influential tool for creating successful teams and individuals. John Wooden did not only coach college basketball but he also played college basketball, teach and coach at the high school level, serve in the Navy, and was rewarded with the Distinguished American Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Wooden was a true inspiration and helped lead his teams and players to success, but also created a legacy that helped other individuals and teams become successful.
