Why 2025 is the Year to Watch NCAA Volleyball

Overview

When thinking about NCAA sports to watch in the fall, most people are drawn to college football. But college football is just one of the college sports that are in season in the fall. Another exciting sport to watch this fall is college NCAA volleyball. In, recent years college volleyball has seen record high attendance along with the reintroduction of a team that hasn’t played in 45 years. Along with that each volleyball team has long held traditions that are fun to participate in and watch. In todays blog post we will be looking at some current news and traditions in NCAA college Volleyball.

Current News

One exciting piece of news from NCAA D1 volleyball is that Vanderbilt brought back its Volleyball team. After 45 years without a volleyball team this fall Vanderbilt brought back their team winning their first home game against Belmont. Currently the team plays on a temporary outdoor stadium for their first home games.
Currently only two teams are undefeated, Nebraska and Texas. Nebraska which is number 1 in their conference with a winning streak of 11 - 0 and Texas is number 2 with a winning streak of 10 - 0. To have a season with no losses is rare and has only happened to five teams, Penn State had 2 no loss season, Southern California, Nebraska, and Long Beach State. Maybe this year Texas can be added to the list and Nebraska can have another no loss season.
On August 30, 2023 the game between Nebraska and Omaha had an all-time record of attendance of 92,003 fans coming to watch the game in the Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. This is the highest attendance for a D1 Women’s College Volleyball game and is the highest attended women’s sporting event globally.
 

Traditions

Before every home game The Penn State Women’s Volleyball team bangs their hands on the bleachers at one end of the gym, run two laps around the gym, and then go through jumping drills. While this tradition is nothing big they continue to do this same routine every time they have a home game, helps to keep them connected to teams of the past.
The Wisconsin Badgers Volleyball team has a fun traditions of fans jumping to House of Pain’s “Jump Around” between sets. This is a fun tradition that gets the crowd on their feet and energized to cheer their team onto victory.
The University of Hawai’i at Monoa has a traditions of honoring their seniors through a special senior night packed full of traditions. This ceremony includes teammates, coaches, and families gifting the seniors leis, a long celebration that can last hours after the game, seniors give heartfelt speeches, and the seniors family join them on the court. This senior night is a special way to celebrate the seniors in the program before they graduate.
